When most Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus brimming with wildlife and flora not typically found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every portrayal of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known enclave at Imperial, I wish to showcase the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and featuring ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A brief search on iNaturalist, an application for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with an online network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and a further exploration on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted on campus thus far.<\/p>\n

More intriguingly, Silwood Park also hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more prominent studies conducted here.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students who are passionate about ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Most of us are actively involved in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for the care of the chickens kept behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 who meet regularly to discuss various books of interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 who oversee the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 who arrange nature walks and conservation-oriented events for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Being part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities from clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have groups involved in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we host numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park features its own student council that organizes and coordinates such events to ensure a vibrant and lively student experience! Recently, we\u2019ve organized the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community convened to exchange languages and cultures over a few weeks, and we also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year at the year\u2019s start, where everyone came together to make dumplings and couplets to commence the new lunar year. Moreover, we\u2019ve enjoyed community-organized parties celebrating global events (like Carnival) or simply gatherings for the joy of celebrating.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite event on campus must be the weekly pub quiz, hosted by our student community. It is a tradition at Silwood that the quiz losers are responsible for setting the next one, and I can proudly claim the record for the most pub quizzes organized this year. Despite losing a multitude of quizzes due to my inadequate general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always plenty of fun to be had with good company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed monotonous or uninteresting. In addition to the plethora of events and activities, we boast a warm and inviting community composed of students from across the globe. We all share a passion for nature, appreciate our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, enjoy each other\u2019s company. We form a close-knit community that revels in spending time together.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
