When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus brimming with wildlife and flora rarely found at our other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park is true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known sector of Imperial, I wish to shed light on the student experience, activities, and the community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and open meadows. A simple inquiry on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations with a global network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. A further exploration on eBird shows that 111 bird species have been identified on campus to date.<\/p>\n

More intriguingly, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the most recognized studies conducted here.<\/p>\n

Life of Students at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students engaged in ecology, conservation, and evolution studies. Many of us are active members of various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 taking care of chickens raised behind our residences<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 frequently discussing engaging literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the community garden allotments<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation-oriented activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, several of us are also involved in and regularly participate in activities for clubs situated in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs that engage in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we organize various community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that coordinates and facilitates such events, ensuring a lively and thrilling student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks. We also welcomed the new lunar year by celebrating Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, making dumplings and couplets. Moreover, we’ve enjoyed community-organized festivities celebrating global occasions (like Carnival) or parties simply for the joy of gatherings.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus, however, is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the losers of the pub quiz prepare the next one, and I can proudly claim the highest number of pub quizzes created this year. Despite my frequent losses due to my lacking general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s consistently great enjoyment shared among friends and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my sanctuary away from home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Although it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll to the lively civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has always felt vibrant and fulfilling. Beyond the myriad of events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community made up of students from around the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus landscape, and, most importantly, each other’s presence. We are a close-knit group that delights in stargazing during the winter chill in the open field beside our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our windows, and spending quality time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
