When the majority of Imperial students envision Silwood Park, they picture a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus filled with wildlife and vegetation seldom found at other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In numerous respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park is indeed true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known segment of the Imperial community, I would like to emphasize the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and showcasing ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, a platform for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations with a global network of naturalists, discloses that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Additionally, a search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been documented so far.<\/p>\n

Moreover, Silwood Park is home to several long-term field research projects, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the most recognized studies carried out on-site.<\/p>\n

Student experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students who are engaged in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us belong to various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for caring for the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 meets regularly to discuss books of interest on their reading lists<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 oversees the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 organizes nature walks and conservation-related activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Being part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also frequently engage in activities offered by clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Additionally, we have informal clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we have numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities to ensure a vibrant and dynamic student atmosphere! In the past few months, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, allowing our largely international community to come together and share languages and cultures over several weeks. We also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year event at the beginning of the year, where everyone joined in to make dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Community-organized parties celebrating global events (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of gathering have also taken place.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus tradition has to be the weekly pub quiz run by our student community. It\u2019s ingrained in Silwood culture that the quiz losers are responsible for organizing the next event, and I can proudly say I hold the record for the most quizzes set this year. Despite losing many quizzes due to my limited general knowledge, there\u2019s always great fun to be experienced with good company and a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the lively atmosphere of civilization (such as the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or lacking. Beyond the myriad events and activities, we have a friendly and inclusive community made up of students from various parts of the globe. We all appreciate nature, cherish our beautiful campus grounds, and, most importantly, enjoy each other\u2019s company.
