When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they conjure up an emerald, enigmatic, and verdant campus brimming with wildlife and vegetation not typically found at other sites like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are accurate \u2013 every portrayal of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this relatively obscure community within Imperial, I wish to shed light on the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

A glimpse of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s open-air laboratory, covering 77 hectares and showcasing ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive meadows. A brief search on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with an online network of naturalists, uncovers that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Furthermore, an inquiry on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been observed on campus thus far.<\/p>\n

More captivatingly, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, including Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, two prominent projects carried out on-site.<\/p>\n

Student experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many of us are members of various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable clubs include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 taking care of chickens raised behind our halls of residence<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 discussing interesting books on a regular basis<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation initiatives for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (which happens to be my favorite!), organized either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we host many community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its student council dedicated to organizing and facilitating these activities, ensuring a lively and dynamic student life! In recent months, we organized the Silwood language exchange, where our international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, as well as our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone gathered to make dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Community-organized celebrations for global events (such as Carnival) or simply for the joy of gathering have also taken place.<\/p>\n

    However, the event I cherish the most on campus has to be the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It\u2019s a part of Silwood tradition that those who lose the pub quiz must arrange the next one, and I can proudly assert that I have set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite failing numerous pub quizzes due to my lackluster general trivia knowledge, the experience is always filled with fun, good company, and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my sanctuary away from home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of the outside world (such as the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or insufficient. Along with a plethora of events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inclusive community of students hailing from all corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, more importantly, each other\u2019s companionship. We are a tight-knit community that relishes stargazing in the chilly winter months on the open field beside our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our room windows, and spending quality time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
