When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a vibrant, enchanting, and verdant campus filled with wildlife and plants that are seldom encountered at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known faction within Imperial, I’d like to showcase the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park operates as Imperial\u2019s open-air laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing environments like freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, a platform for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with an online community of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been documented on campus. A supplementary search on eBird uncovers that 111 bird species have been logged on campus thus far.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park serves as the location for numerous long-term field research endeavors, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more recognized investigations carried out on-site.<\/p>\n

Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily hosts postgraduate students with interests in ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. Many of us belong to a variety of clubs based at Silwood Park. Some well-known examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for caring for the chickens located behind our halls of residence<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 who meet regularly to discuss engaging literary works<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments within our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 who coordinate nature walks and conservation-focused activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the larger Imperial student body, numerous members also engage in club activities based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have groups participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), utilizing either the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we host various community-led events on campus. Silwood Park features its own student council responsible for organizing and facilitating these activities to promote a lively and exciting student experience! Recently, we\u2019ve enjoyed the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year festivity at the beginning of the year, where everyone gathered to create dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also organized community parties celebrating global events (such as Carnival) or just for the joy of celebration.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus must be the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It\u2019s a tradition at Silwood that the quiz losers host the next one, and I can proudly state that I hold the record for the highest number of pub quizzes organized this year. Despite consistently losing pub quizzes due to my limited general knowledge, there\u2019s always enjoyment to be found with great company and a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the bustling energy of civilization (for example, the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt tedious or lacking. In addition to the many events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community made up of students from across the globe. We cherish nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a close-knit community that enjoys stargazing during the chilly winter nights.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
