When most students from Imperial envision Silwood Park, they picture a verdant, enchanting, and green campus alive with wildlife and vegetation not frequently found in other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 every representation of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known segment of the Imperial community, I wish to emphasize student life, activities, and the community within our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

A glimpse into Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing diverse habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open meadows. A brief search on iNaturalist, an application for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide among a network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. A further inquiry on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been documented on campus so far.<\/p>\n

Moreover, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two prominent studies taking place on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. Many of us engage in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to the chickens raised behind our residences<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 frequently discussing books of interest from our reading list<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 organizing nature walks and conservation efforts for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, several of us also partake in activities offered by clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs participating in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities nearby in towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and lectures, we host various community-led events on our campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and facilitates such events, ensuring a lively and engaging student life! In recent months, we\u2019ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks, as well as our annual Chinese New Year celebration, where everyone prepared dumplings and couplets to greet the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also had community-organized gatherings celebrating global events (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of festivities.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite event on campus has to be the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the losing team of the pub quiz sets up the next one, and I can proudly claim the highest number of pub quizzes organized this year. Even though I\u2019ve lost numerous pub quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, it\u2019s always a delightful time with great company and a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Despite being a 30-minute stroll away from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has consistently felt vibrant and fulfilling. Besides the multitude of events and activities, we\u2019ve cultivated a warm and inviting community consisting of students from around the globe. We all share a passion for nature, cherish our stunning campus grounds, and, more importantly, enjoy each other’s presence. We\u2019re a close-knit community that relishes stargazing in the winter chill in the open field next to our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
