When many Imperial students envision Silwood Park, they picture a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus bustling with wildlife and plant life not typically found at other campuses such as South Kensington or White City. In numerous aspects, they are correct\u2014each portrayal of Silwood Park is precise!<\/p>\n

As an ambassador for this less-publicized community at Imperial, I aim to spotlight the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A straightforward search on iNaturalist, an application designed for mapping and sharing biodiversity findings globally with a network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on our campus. Additionally, a search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been observed on the campus to date.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Silwood Park is home to various long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more distinguished projects conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus predominantly accommodates postgraduate students passionate about ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many of us engage in numerous clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to the chickens raised behind our student accommodations<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 regularly convening to discuss intriguing books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 taking care of the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation-related activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As members of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also take part in activities of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we foster clubs that engage in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club-related activities and classes, there are numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and coordinates these events to ensure a lively and dynamic student experience! In recent months, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over a few weeks, and we celebrated Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, making dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also held community-organized parties celebrating various global events (such as Carnival) or simply out of a love for celebrations.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood culture that the quiz losers are responsible for setting the next one, and I can proudly say I\u2019ve set the most quizzes this year. Despite losing several pub quizzes due to my limited general knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment in the company of friends and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or lacking. Along with countless events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community of students from all corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus scenery, and, most importantly, each other\u2019s presence. We form a close-knit community that relishes stargazing in the chilly winter on the open field next to our bar, observing the wildlife that visits our windows, and spending quality time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
