When many students at Imperial visualize Silwood Park, they picture a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus alive with a variety of wildlife and vegetation seldom found at other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In numerous respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known community within Imperial, I wish to showcase the student experiences, activities, and camaraderie present at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and vast grasslands. A brief exploration on iNaturalist, a platform for recording and sharing biodiversity observations with a global network of naturalists, uncovers 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi recorded on campus. Furthermore, eBird has documented 111 bird species noted on campus thus far.<\/p>\n

Even more fascinating, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more notable research endeavors conducted in the area.<\/p>\n

Student Experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students who are engaged in ecology, conservation, and evolution research. Many of us are active in a variety of clubs based at Silwood Park. Some prominent examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 taking care of chickens raised behind our residential halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 routinely discussing literature from their reading list<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments within our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 organizing nature walks and conservation efforts for students at Silwood Park.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my favorite!), held either at the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports venues in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Alongside club activities and lessons, we host numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and oversees these activities, ensuring a lively and stimulating student life! In recent months, we held a Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks. We also celebrated Chinese New Year at the start of the year, preparing dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. Community-organized gatherings have celebrated global occasions (like Carnival) or simply brought together friends for the joy of celebration.<\/p>\n

    My favorite campus event is the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the pub quiz losers set the next one, and I can proudly assert the highest number of quizzes set this year. Although I have lost many quizzes due to my insufficient general knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment accompanied by good friends and a fine pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my home away from home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively bustle of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt trivial or insufficient. In addition to the abundance of events and activities, we boast a warm and inviting community of students from around the globe. We share a passion for nature, cherish our stunning campus, and, more importantly, enjoy each other\u2019s company. We form a close-knit group that appreciates stargazing in the chill of winter on the open fields adjacent to our bar, observing birds and mammals outside our windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n
