When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they think of a lush, mysterious, and green campus bustling with wildlife and plants seldom seen at other locations such as South Kensington or White City. They are largely correct \u2013 every representation of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known Imperial community, I wish to showcase the student experience, activities, and camaraderie within our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Welcome to Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park acts as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and featuring environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application designed for mapping and sharing biodiversity insights worldwide within an online community of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been identified on campus. Furthermore, a check on eBird shows that 111 different bird species have been observed on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Of particular interest, Silwood Park is home to many long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the most notable studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly serves postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution endeavors. Many of us partake in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some key examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 taking care of the chickens raised behind our dormitories<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 frequently discussing books of interest from our reading lists<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our shared garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 organizing nature walks and conservation efforts for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the wider Imperial student community, many of us also get involved in activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have groups participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), based either on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we organize numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that plans and coordinates such events, ensuring a lively and engaging student experience! Recent months have seen the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and we welcomed the start of the year with our annual Chinese New Year celebration, making dumplings and couplets to honor the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also hosted community-organized parties celebrating global festivities (like Carnival) or simply for the enjoyment of gathering.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood culture that the losing team of the pub quiz is responsible for setting the next one, and I can proudly state that I have set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Although I have lost many pub quizzes due to my inadequate general knowledge, there\u2019s always a great time to be had with good company and a fine pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the bustling life of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed tedious or insufficient. Apart from the myriad events and activities, we are part of a friendly and inviting community made up of students from across the globe. We all appreciate nature, treasure our beautiful campus grounds, and, more significantly, relish each other\u2019s company. We are a tight-knit community that enjoys stargazing in the winter chill on the open field beside our pub, observing the birds and mammals that visit our room windows, and spending<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
