When the majority of Imperial students think about Silwood Park, they picture a lush, enigmatic, and vibrant campus filled with wildlife and plants not often found at other campuses like South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they\u2019re right \u2013 every image imagined of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known community at Imperial, I want to shed light on the student life, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Presenting Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park operates as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and featuring habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an app designed to map and share biodiversity observations globally within an online naturalist community, uncovers that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, with an additional search on eBird indicating that 111 bird species have been noted on site thus far.<\/p>\n

Curiously, Silwood Park is also home to multiple long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, which are two of the more prominent projects undertaken here.<\/p>\n

Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly hosts postgraduate scholars focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution studies. A lot of us take part in diverse clubs based at Silwood Park. Key examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 coming together regularly to delve into various books of interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments within our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 facilitating nature walks and conservation-oriented activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage in activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs that focus on sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), based either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Alongside club functions and academic sessions, we have numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and manages such events, fostering a lively and enjoyable student experience! In recent months, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community came together to share languages and cultures over several weeks. Additionally, we celebrated our annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year by making dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. Community-organized parties celebrating global festivities (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of gathering have also taken place.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student body. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the losing teams of the pub quiz have to organize the next one, and I can proudly claim the record for the most pub quizzes set this year. Even though I\u2019ve lost many quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always a good time to be had with great company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Sanctuary Away from Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (like the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never been dull or wanting. Beyond the many events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community made up of students from all around the globe. We all share a passion for nature, appreciate our beautiful campus surroundings, and, most importantly, enjoy each other\u2019s presence. We are a tight-knit community that finds joy in stargazing on chilly winter nights in the open field next to our<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
