When most Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they think of a vibrant, enigmatic, and green campus filled with wildlife and flora not commonly found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they\u2019re accurate \u2013 every portrayal of Silwood Park is precise!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I want to shed light on the student life, events, and community present at our natural park-like campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Getting to know Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and comprising environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and open meadows. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for mapping and sharing biodiversity findings globally with a community of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. An additional inquiry on eBird discloses that 111 bird species have been observed on campus so far.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is also the venue for many extensive field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more recognized studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Life of students at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students engaged in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us belong to various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for caring for the chickens raised behind our residences<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 who meet regularly to discuss books of mutual interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 who oversee the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 who arrange nature walks and conservation-focused activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As members of the larger Imperial student body, many of us are also affiliated with and frequently partake in activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we also have clubs that participate in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), based either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we host numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates such events to promote a lively and engaging student life! In recent months, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community united to exchange languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also welcomed the Chinese New Year at the year’s start by making dumplings and couplets to celebrate the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized gatherings celebrating global occasions like Carnival or parties simply for the joy of festivities.<\/p>\n

    <pHowever, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz orchestrated by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the losing team of the pub quiz has to organize the next one, and I can proudly say I hold the record for the most pub quizzes set this year. Even though I\u2019ve lost numerous pub quizzes due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always a good time to be had with great company and a delightful pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my sanctuary away from home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the vibrant life of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or lacking. Beyond the multitude of events and activities, we enjoy a warm and friendly community made up of students from across the globe. We all cherish nature, our beautiful campus grounds, and, more importantly, each other\u2019s company. We are a close-knit community that takes pleasure in stargazing in the chilly winter on the open field adjacent to our bar, watching birds and mammals visit our room windows,<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
