When the majority of Imperial students envision Silwood Park, they see a vibrant, enigmatic, and green campus bustling with wildlife and flora rarely encountered at other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known segment of the Imperial community, I wish to showcase the student experiences, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

A glimpse of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, spanning 77 hectares and featuring ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations globally alongside a network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while a search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted to date.<\/p>\n

Moreover, Silwood Park is also the venue for multiple long-term field research projects, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, which are among the more prominent initiatives conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student experiences at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily houses postgraduate students focused on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are involved in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable examples are:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for caring for the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 which meets regularly to discuss noteworthy literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 tending to the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 which arranges nature walks and conservation-centered activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage in events organized by clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Additionally, we have informal groups engaging in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either in the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we have numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and manages such events to foster a lively and enjoyable student atmosphere! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community came together to share languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the year\u2019s start, where everyone united to make dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also organized community parties celebrating events from around the globe (like Carnival), or simply parties held out of love for gatherings.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event is undoubtedly the weekly pub quiz, orchestrated by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the losing teams of the pub quiz must organize the next one, and I can proudly state that I hold the record for the most pub quizzes arranged this year. Despite my frequent losses in pub quizzes due to my limited general knowledge, there\u2019s always a great time to be had with fantastic company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of the town (for example, the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt boring or lacking. In addition to the numerous events and activities, we are part of a warm and inviting community made up of students from all corners of the globe. All of us share a love for nature, cherish our stunning campus grounds, and, more importantly, enjoy<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
