In many respects, they are right – every portrayal of Silwood Park is true!

As a member of this lesser-known enclave at Imperial, I wish to shine a light on the student experience, activities, and community present at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

Overview of Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and showcasing ecosystems like freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and grassy expanses. A quick query on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations globally with a network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while a supplementary search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted thus far.

Moreover, Silwood Park hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more recognized studies carried out on-site.

Student Experience at Silwood Park

The campus primarily harbors postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many of us take part in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some prominent examples include:

Chicken Club – dedicated to caring for the chickens raised behind our residence halls

Book Club – which convenes regularly to discuss titles of interest on their reading list

Gardening Club – responsible for the upkeep of the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – that coordinates nature walks and conservation-related activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student population, many of us are also members and actively engage in activities of clubs based in South Kensington!

Additionally, we have informal clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), hosted either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in the indoor sports facilities located in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Beyond club activities and lessons, our campus hosts numerous community-led events. Silwood Park features its own student council that organizes and promotes such activities to ensure an engaging and dynamic student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community united to share languages and cultures over a few weeks, and we also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year festivities at the beginning of the year, where everyone came together to prepare dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Community-organized parties have also marked celebrations from around the globe (like Carnival), or parties simply motivated by the joy of celebrating.

However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, led by our student community. It is a Silwood tradition that the losing teams of the pub quiz must host the next one, and I can proudly assert that I hold the record for the most pub quizzes set this year. Even though I have lost many pub quizzes due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there is always plenty of enjoyment to be had with wonderful company and a good pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Although it’s a 30-minute walk from the lively buzz of civilization (like the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or unfulfilling. In addition to the multitude of events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community made up of students from across the globe. We all share a love for nature

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When most Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a verdant, intriguing, and green environment brimming with wildlife and vegetation not typically found at other campuses such as South Kensington or White City.
