In numerous aspects, they are correct – and every visual imagined of Silwood Park holds true!

As a voice for this lesser-known segment at Imperial, I wish to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community present at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.

Introducing Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and consisting of habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and expansive grasslands. A straightforward search on iNaturalist, an application where users can map and share biodiversity observations within a global network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while a further search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been sighted here so far.

More intriguingly, Silwood Park hosts numerous long-term field research endeavors, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the most recognized projects carried out on-site.

The Student Experience at Silwood Park

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students engaged in projects surrounding ecology, conservation, and evolution. A majority of us are involved in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Notable examples include:

Chicken Club – responsible for the care of chickens kept behind our residence halls

Book Club – which meets regularly to discuss books of interest on their reading list

Gardening Club – tasked with managing the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – which organizes nature walks and conservation activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the larger Imperial student body, many of us also belong to and actively partake in clubs based in South Kensington!

Additionally, we have informal clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which take place either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at the indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Alongside club activities and classes, numerous community-led events take place on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and coordinates these activities to ensure a lively and exciting student life! In recent months, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community gathered to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, where everyone collaborated to prepare dumplings and couplets to welcome a new lunar year. Additionally, we’ve enjoyed community-organized parties honoring celebrations from around the globe (such as Carnival), as well as parties simply for the joy of celebrating.

However, my favorite campus event undoubtedly has to be the weekly pub quiz, orchestrated by our student community. It’s part of Silwood culture that the pub quiz losers must organize the next one and I can proudly declare that I have set the most pub quizzes this year. Despite my frequent defeats in pub quizzes due to my lack of knowledge in general trivia, there’s always great fun to be found with excellent company and a good pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Even though it’s situated a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (for instance, the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or unexciting.
