In many respects, they’re correct – every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!

As a voice for this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I’d like to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.

An overview of Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and showcasing habitats that include freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, a platform for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations globally within a social network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. An additional review on eBird reveals that 111 bird species have been spotted on campus thus far.

More intriguingly, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more renowned studies carried out on-site.

Student experience at Silwood Park

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students focusing on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are spread across various clubs based at Silwood Park. Notable examples include:

Chicken Club – responsible for caring for the chickens reared behind our residences

Book Club – regularly convening to delve into books that pique their interest

Gardening Club – overseeing the allotments within our community garden

Conservation Club – arranging nature walks and conservation activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us are also contributors and actively take part in clubs based in South Kensington!

Casually, we have clubs that engage in sports including badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), hosted either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at the indoor sports facilities in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.

Beyond club activities and lessons, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and facilitates such happenings to ensure an engaging and dynamic student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community gathered to share our languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year event at the beginning of the year, where everyone participated in making dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Additionally, we’ve enjoyed community-organized parties acknowledging celebrations from around the globe (like Carnival), or simply parties held for the sheer joy of celebrating.

However, my favorite campus activity has to be the weekly pub quiz organized by our student community. It’s customary in Silwood culture that the losing team of the pub quiz must set up the next one, and I can proudly state that I’ve set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite frequently losing due to my limited knowledge of general trivia, there’s always good fun to be had in the company of friends and a refreshing pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Even though it’s situated a 30-minute walk from the lively pulse of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed tedious or lacking. Alongside the many events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community made up of students from

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a verdant, enigmatic, and thriving campus overflowing with wildlife and plants not frequently encountered at our other campuses such as South Kensington or White City.
