When the majority of Imperial students think about Silwood Park, they picture a verdant, intriguing, and lush campus bustling with wildlife and vegetation rarely found at other campuses such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are right \u2013 every representation of Silwood Park is true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known faction at Imperial, I wish to underscore the student life, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Presenting Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and featuring ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an app dedicated to mapping and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide within a community of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on the campus. A further inquiry on eBird indicates that 111 species of birds have been documented on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is also the location for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more recognized studies carried out on-site.<\/p>\n

Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus predominantly hosts postgraduate students focused on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are engaged in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Prominent examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to the chickens raised behind our dormitories<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 gathering regularly to discuss various fascinating books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 coordinating nature walks and conservation-related activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the larger Imperial student body, many of us also join and frequently take part in activities organized by clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    In an informal capacity, we also have clubs participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (which happens to be my personal favorite!), played either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and facilitates such happenings to maintain an engaging and vibrant student life! Recently, we\u2019ve enjoyed a Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone gathered to make dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also participated in community-planned parties celebrating global events (like Carnival) or festivities simply for the enjoyment of gatherings.<\/p>\n

    Yet, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood tradition that the losers of the pub quiz will organize the next one, and I can proudly state that I hold the record for the most pub quizzes set this year. Despite losing many quizzes due to my insufficient general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always a great time to be had with good friends and a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Refuge Away from Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it’s a 30-minute stroll from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed tedious or deficient. Beyond the multitude of events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inviting community made up of students from around the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus environment, and, most importantly, each other’s company. We\u2019re a close-knit community that delights in stargazing during the chilly winters on<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
