In numerous respects, they are correct – every depiction of Silwood Park is spot on!

As an advocate for this less familiar community at Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and atmosphere at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.

A glimpse into Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and featuring environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an app for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations globally within a network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and an additional search on eBird shows that 111 species of birds have been documented to date.

Interestingly, Silwood Park is also home to numerous long-standing field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two prominent studies carried out on the premises.

Campus life at Silwood Park

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. Many of us belong to various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:

Chicken Club – responsible for caring for the chickens raised behind our residence halls

Book Club – who meet regularly to discuss books that pique their interest

Gardening Club – who oversee the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – who arrange nature walks and conservation-related activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, numerous members also engage in activities of clubs based in South Kensington!

Informally, we have groups that participate in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), utilizing either the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports facilities situated in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.

In addition to club activities and classes, there are many community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and coordinates such activities to maintain a vibrant and dynamic student life! In recent months, we’ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international community united to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year gathering at the beginning of the year, where everyone collaborated to make dumplings and couplets to ring in the new lunar year. We’ve also enjoyed community-hosted parties commemorating global events (like Carnival), or gatherings held simply for the joy of celebrating.

However, my favorite campus tradition must be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student body. It’s a part of Silwood culture that the quiz losers must plan the next one, and I can proudly claim the record for the most quizzes set this year. Although I’ve lost many pub quizzes due to my inadequate trivia knowledge, there’s always great enjoyment to be found with fantastic company and a good pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my home beyond home

Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the bustling essence of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or insufficient. Besides the myriad of events and activities, we have a friendly and inclusive community consisting of students from across the globe. We all share a love for nature, appreciate our stunning campus grounds, and more significantly, enjoy

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When many Imperial students think about Silwood Park, they picture a rich, enigmatic, and verdant campus overflowing with wildlife and plant species rarely found at other locations such as South Kensington or White City.
