When students at Imperial imagine Silwood Park, they picture a vibrant, enigmatic, green campus filled with distinct wildlife and plants, quite different from those found at South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known Imperial community, I\u2019d like to shine a light on the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Presenting Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park acts as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A search on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide, reveals 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi recorded on campus. An additional search on eBird indicates 111 bird species documented thus far.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is home to various long-term field research projects, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, both among the more recognized projects conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a Student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution studies. We are involved in several clubs based at Silwood Park. Prominent examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 caring for chickens kept behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 engaging in regular discussions about interesting books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation activities for students on the Silwood Park campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have clubs participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and classes, there are numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates such endeavors, ensuring an engaging and vibrant student life! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks. We also welcomed the Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, making dumplings and couplets to celebrate the new lunar year. Furthermore, we\u2019ve enjoyed community-organized parties celebrating global occasions (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of festivities.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s a tradition at Silwood that those who lose the quiz are responsible for setting the next one, and I can proudly say I\u2019ve organized the most quizzes this year. Despite failing many quizzes due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, it\u2019s always a delightful time with good friends and a great pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Second Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from urban areas (like the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park never feels dull or lacking. Alongside countless events and activities, we enjoy a warm and inviting community of students from around the globe. We all share a love for nature, our beautiful campus grounds, and, more importantly, each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a tight-knit community relishing stargazing in the chilly winter on the open field beside our bar, observing birds and mammals grace our windows, and spending quality time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

    Most evenings, I prepare meals with my close friend from India, who shares my passion for Asian cuisine and birdwatching. Friends from nearby residence halls frequently join us. After dinner, we<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
