When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they think of a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus filled with wildlife and plants not frequently encountered at other campuses such as South Kensington or White City. In numerous respects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 each depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I would like to showcase the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and featuring ecosystems that include freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A straightforward search on iNaturalist, an application for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations with a global network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while a further investigation on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been identified so far.<\/p>\n

More fascinatingly, Silwood Park is also the venue for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more prominent studies undertaken on-site.<\/p>\n

Student experiences at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. Many of us engage in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Prominent examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 dedicated to caring for the chickens kept behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 who meet regularly to discuss intriguing literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 managing the plots in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 organizing nature walks and conservation-centered activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the larger Imperial student body, many of us also take part in activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs that partake in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or within indoor sports facilities in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and coordinates such events, contributing to a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we\u2019ve held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the year\u2019s start, where everyone united to make dumplings and couplets to greet the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also organized community parties celebrating worldwide events (such as Carnival), or just parties celebrating the joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, put together by our student community. It\u2019s tradition at Silwood for the losers of the pub quiz to organize the next one, and I can proudly assert the highest number of pub quizzes arranged this year. Despite my repeated losses at pub quizzes due to inadequate general trivia knowledge, it\u2019s always enjoyable to partake in good company with a fine pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it takes a 30-minute walk to reach the bustling energy of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or insufficient. Alongside the myriad events and activities, we foster a friendly and inviting community made up of students from various corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, appreciate our stunning campus grounds, and, more importantly, value each other\u2019s presence. We\u2019re a tight-knit community that delights in starry nights.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
