In many ways, they are right—every mental image of Silwood Park holds true!

As an advocate for this lesser-known enclave at Imperial, I wish to showcase the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.

Introducing Silwood Park

Silwood Park acts as Imperial’s outdoor research hub, covering 77 hectares and featuring ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” woodland, and open meadows. A quick exploration on iNaturalist, an application for tracking and sharing global biodiversity sightings with a community of naturalists online, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on-site. Furthermore, a check on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been identified on campus to date.

More fascinatingly, Silwood Park also hosts various long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more distinguished studies conducted here.

Student Life at Silwood Park

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students focusing on topics related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us take part in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Significant examples include:

Chicken Club – tasked with the care of chickens raised behind our housing facilities

Book Club – regularly convenes to discuss selections from their reading list

Gardening Club – oversees the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – arranges nature walks and conservation-related activities for students at Silwood Park.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities of clubs located in South Kensington!

Casually, we have groups that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either at the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports venues in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Apart from club activities and classes, we organize numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park possesses its own student council that coordinates and facilitates such events to cultivate a vibrant and dynamic student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community gathered to share languages and cultures over several weeks. We also commemorated the annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, making dumplings and couplets to celebrate the new lunar year. Additionally, we’ve hosted community-organized gatherings celebrating global festivities (like Carnival) or simply to revel in the joy of parties.

Yet my favorite campus activity is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It’s a Silwood tradition that the teams with the lowest scores must organize the next quiz, and I can proudly assert that I have set the most pub quizzes this year. Despite losing many pub quizzes due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there’s always a great deal of enjoyment to be found with good friends and a nice pint of beer.

Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home

Even though it’s a 30-minute stroll from the lively energy of civilization (e.g., the train station and the closest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or unfulfilled. Beyond the multitude of events and activities, we have a warm and inviting community made up of students from all corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, appreciate our stunning campus grounds, and, more importantly, relish each other’s company. We’re a tight-knit community that enjoys stargazing during the winter.

Written by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a rich, enigmatic, and green campus bustling with wildlife and plant life not usually found at other locations such as South Kensington or White City.
