When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus bustling with wildlife and plant life not typically found at other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In numerous respects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 every portrayal of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known segment of the Imperial community, I wish to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park operates as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and showcasing ecosystems like freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive meadows. A straightforward search on iNaturalist, a platform for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide through a social network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. An additional search on eBird shows that 111 bird species have been recorded on campus to date.<\/p>\n

More fascinatingly, Silwood Park is also the location for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more recognized projects carried out onsite.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students engaged in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us are involved in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for caring for the chickens kept behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 who regularly meet to discuss books of interest from their reading list<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 who take care of the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 who arrange nature walks and conservation-focused activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage in activities from clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we also have clubs that participate in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and manages such activities to foster a lively and interesting student life! In the recent months, we\u2019ve held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community connected to share languages and cultures over a few weeks, and we\u2019ve also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year, where everyone united to make dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Additionally, community-organized parties have celebrated worldwide events (like Carnival) or were simply hosted for the enjoyment of gatherings.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus, however, has to be the weekly pub quiz organized by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the losers of the pub quiz are responsible for organizing the next one, and I can shamelessly admit I hold the record for the most pub quizzes organized this year. Despite losing many pub quizzes due to my inadequate knowledge of general trivia, there\u2019s always a great time to be had with delightful company and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my abode away from home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (such as the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or insufficient. Alongside the countless events and activities, we share a friendly and inviting community made up of students from around the globe. We all share a passion for nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, above all, cherish each other\u2019s companionship. We\u2019re a<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
