When Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus brimming with distinctive fauna and flora, distinct from South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are right\u2014every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known segment of the Imperial community, I aim to showcase the student life, events, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A brief exploration of iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide amongst naturalists, uncovers 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi recorded on campus. Moreover, eBird indicates 111 bird species identified on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Silwood Park is the site of numerous long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project.<\/p>\n

Student experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus predominantly accommodates postgraduate students engaged in ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many of us are active in clubs based at Silwood Park, such as:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 regularly conversing about interesting literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 tending to allotments in our communal garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 organizing nature walks and conservation initiatives for Silwood Park students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Being part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage with clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have sports clubs such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we host numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and facilitates such events, ensuring an engaging and dynamic student experience! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our international community connected over languages and cultures for several weeks, alongside our annual Chinese New Year celebration, where we prepared dumplings and couplets to greet the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also had community-hosted gatherings celebrating global festivities (like Carnival) or simply to revel in the joy of social gatherings.<\/p>\n

    My personal favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the quiz losers host the next one, and I can boast the highest number of quizzes conducted this year. Despite losing many quizzes due to my limited general knowledge, there\u2019s always enjoyment found in good company and a pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Although it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from civilization (such as the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park always feels exhilarating and fulfilling. Alongside a plethora of events and activities, we have a friendly, inclusive community of students from across the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus, and, importantly, each other\u2019s company. We form a tight-knit community that delights in stargazing in the chilly winter evenings on the open field beside our bar, observing birds and mammals visit our windows, and spending cherished moments with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

    Most evenings, I prepare meals with my cherished friend from India, who shares my passion for Asian cuisine and birdwatching. We are frequently joined by friends residing a short walk away in adjacent halls. After dinner, we typically engage in board games or enjoy movies together. Residing on Silwood Park Campus embodies the essence of tranquility and serenity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
