When students at Imperial picture Silwood Park, they see a lush, enigmatic, and green campus vibrant with distinctive flora and fauna, quite different from those at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they are spot on\u2014every mental image of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Welcome to Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park functions as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and including environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A brief look on iNaturalist, an app dedicated to mapping and exchanging biodiversity insights globally within a network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Also, eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been identified there.<\/p>\n

More fascinatingly, Silwood Park is home to various long-term field research initiatives, such as the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, which rank among the most recognized projects undertaken on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a Student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly hosts postgraduate students engaged in ecology, conservation, and evolution endeavors. We are primarily divided among several clubs located at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 looking after the chickens raised behind our residences<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 convening regularly to discuss intriguing books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our communal garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 orchestrating nature walks and conservation efforts for Silwood Park students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also join the activities of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs involved in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), utilizing either the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or gyms in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and classes, various community-led events take place on campus. Silwood Park has its dedicated student council that organizes and coordinates these events, ensuring a lively and engaging student experience! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration, where everyone made dumplings and couplets to greet the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized parties celebrating global occasions (like Carnival) or just enjoying the spirit of celebration.<\/p>\n

    My favorite weekly event is the pub quiz, hosted by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood culture that quiz losers are responsible for organizing the next one, and I can proudly say I\u2019ve set the highest number of quizzes this year. Despite losing many quizzes due to my limited general knowledge, there\u2019s always fun to be had with good company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Another Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Although it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (such as the train station and the closest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or deficient. Beyond the myriad of events and activities, we possess a welcoming and friendly community of students from all over the globe. We all appreciate nature, treasure our beautiful campus grounds, and, most significantly, relish each other\u2019s presence. We\u2019re a close community that enjoys watching the stars in the winter chill on the open field beside our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our room windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n
