When the majority of Imperial students envision Silwood Park, they picture a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus bustling with wildlife and vegetation seldom found on other campuses like South Kensington or White City. In numerous respects, they are correct\u2014each depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known segment of the Imperial community, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s open-air laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and expansive grasslands. A simple search on iNaturalist, an application for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations globally with a network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Further exploration on eBird reveals that 111 bird species have been registered on campus to date.<\/p>\n

In addition, Silwood Park hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more prominent studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Campus life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students keen on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us engage in various clubs situated at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for caring for the chickens located behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 which meets regularly to discuss intriguing literary works<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 which oversees the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 which organizes nature walks and conservation-related activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also take part in events hosted by clubs in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    In addition, we have informal clubs that partake in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Alongside club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park features its own student council that organizes and coordinates these activities, fostering a lively and engaging student life! In recent months, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks; we also celebrated the Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year by making dumplings and couplets to greet the new lunar year. Furthermore, we’ve had community-organized parties to honor global events (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of celebration.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite event on campus must be the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student body. In Silwood tradition, the losers of the pub quiz are tasked with preparing the next one, and I can proudly assert my record of hosting the most pub quizzes this year. Despite facing numerous defeats due to my insufficient general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always a good time to be had with great friends and a delightful pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively aspects of civilization (like the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or insufficient. Along with the myriad of events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community made up of students from around the world. We all appreciate nature, cherish our stunning campus grounds, and, crucially, enjoy each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a close-knit community that relishes stargazing in the winter chill on the open field beside our bar, watching<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
