In many respects, they are right, and each portrayal of Silwood Park holds true!

As a representative of this less recognized sector of Imperial, I wish to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.

An introduction to Silwood Park

Silwood Park stands as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and showcasing environments like freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” woodland, and expansive grasslands. A quick inquiry on iNaturalist, an application dedicated to mapping and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with an online community of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and an additional search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted thus far.

Intriguingly, Silwood Park also hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, including the well-known Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project conducted on-site.

Student life at Silwood Park

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students engaged in projects focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are involved in various clubs that are based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:

Chicken Club – who care for the chickens raised behind our residence halls

Book Club – who meet regularly to discuss books of interest from their reading list

Gardening Club – who oversee the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – who arrange nature walks and conservation-oriented activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us are also members of and actively engage in clubs based in South Kensington!

Moreover, we have informal clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), utilizing either the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or the indoor sports facilities located in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.

Beyond club activities and lessons, numerous community-driven events unfold on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and oversees these activities to ensure an engaging and lively student life! In recent times, we’ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international community united to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we celebrated our annual Chinese New Year event at the beginning of the year, bringing everyone together to make dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve also had community-organized parties honoring celebrations from around the world (like Carnival) or gatherings organized purely for the joy of celebration.

However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student body. It is part of Silwood culture that the quiz losers are responsible for setting up the next one, and I can confidently say I’ve organized the most quizzes this year. Although I’ve lost at many pub quizzes due to my limited general knowledge, there’s always great enjoyment to be found in good company along with a fine pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my home away from home

Even though it is situated a 30-minute walk from the lively scenes of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt routine or lacking. Alongside the multitude of events and activities, we have a friendly and inclusive community made up of students from all corners of the globe.

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a verdant, enigmatic, and vibrant campus filled with distinctive flora and fauna, distinct from other locations such as South Kensington or White City.
