In numerous respects, they’re correct – every portrayal of Silwood Park holds true!

As a voice for this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student experience, initiatives, and community within our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.

Introducing Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick inquiry on iNaturalist, an application dedicated to mapping and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with a community of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. A further check on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been observed on campus to date.

Notably, Silwood Park is also the location for many extensive field research projects, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more recognized studies conducted here.

Life as a student at Silwood Park

The campus primarily houses postgraduate students focused on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us belong to various clubs situated at Silwood Park. Prominent examples include:

Chicken Club – which looks after the chickens raised behind our residence halls

Book Club – which frequently meets to discuss selected books of interest

Gardening Club – which oversees the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – which arranges nature excursions and conservation-related activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also affiliate with and engage in activities of clubs based in South Kensington!

Additionally, we have informal clubs focused on sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports centers in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Apart from club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council which organizes and supports these activities to maintain a lively and dynamic student experience! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our diverse international community came together to exchange languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the year’s beginning, where everyone united to create dumplings and couplets to welcome in the new lunar year. We’ve also celebrated community-organized events acknowledging festivities from around the globe (like Carnival) or gatherings simply for the joy of celebrating.

However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It’s part of Silwood culture that the losing team of the pub quiz has to organize the next one, and I can proudly state that I’ve set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite often losing due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there’s always a great time to be had with good friends and a refreshing pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the bustling charms of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or insufficient. In addition to the myriad events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and supportive community made up of students from around the globe. We all share a passion for nature and cherish our stunning campus grounds.

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet specializing in Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation When many students from Imperial envision Silwood Park, they picture a verdant, enchanting, and green campus buzzing with fauna and flora rarely found at other sites like South Kensington or White City.
