When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus overflowing with wildlife and plants not typically found at our other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 every mental image of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known faction of Imperial, I\u2019d like to shed light on the student life, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and boasting ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and open meadows. A straightforward query on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity sightings globally among a network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been cataloged on campus. A further lookup on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been identified on campus thus far.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Silwood Park is the location of numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project standing out as two of the more prominent studies conducted on location.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students who are engaged in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us belong to several groups based at Silwood Park. Key examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 who attend to the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 who frequently meet to discuss interesting titles from their reading lists<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 who oversee the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 who arrange nature walks and conservation-oriented activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As members of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also participate in the events held by clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have groups that partake in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which are held either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Besides club activities and lectures, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities, fostering a lively and engaging student experience! In recent months, we’ve enjoyed the Silwood language exchange, where our diverse international community came together to share languages and cultural experiences over several weeks. We also welcomed the lunar new year by making dumplings and couplets to celebrate Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year. Community-organized parties have also taken place to celebrate various global events (like Carnival) or just for the enjoyment of social gatherings.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite event on campus has to be the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s customary in Silwood culture that the losing team of the pub quiz organizes the next one, and I can proudly assert that I\u2019ve set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite my unfortunate defeats in numerous pub quizzes due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment to be found in good company alongside a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or deficient. In addition to the myriad of events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community made up of students from various parts of the globe. We all appreciate nature, treasure our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, relish each other\u2019s company.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
