When most Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a lush, enigmatic, and green campus alive with animals and plants not typically found at other campuses like South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they are correct\u2014every depiction of Silwood Park is true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known niche at Imperial, I want to showcase the student life, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Presenting Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and including habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open grasslands. A quick investigation on iNaturalist, an application where users can document and share biodiversity observations globally with a network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Additional investigation on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been counted on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Silwood Park is home to various long-term field research projects, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more prominent studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student Experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily serves postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. Many of us engage in a variety of clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 taking care of the chickens raised behind our residential halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 meeting regularly to discuss interesting books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 organizing nature hikes and conservation activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the greater Imperial student community, many of us also join activities from clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we also have clubs participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, numerous community-led events take place on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and facilitates such events, ensuring a vibrant and dynamic student life! Recently, we\u2019ve had the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, making dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also had community-hosted parties celebrating global festivities (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of gatherings.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus, however, is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood culture that the losers of the quiz must host the next one, and I can proudly say I have set the highest number of quizzes this year. Despite losing many quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always a great time with wonderful company and a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Second Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the pulsating energy of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or insufficient. Beyond the multitude of events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community consisting of students from around the globe. We all appreciate nature, treasure our stunning campus grounds, and, more importantly, enjoy each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a close-knit community that loves stargazing in the wintry chill on the open field next to our bar, watching the birds and mammals that visit our room windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
