In many respects, they are correct – every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!

As a voice for this lesser-known community at Imperial, I want to showcase the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.

A glimpse into Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and comprising habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick look on iNaturalist, an app designed for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with an online network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. An additional search on eBird reveals that 111 bird species have been recorded on campus thus far.

Notably, Silwood Park also hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more recognized projects carried out on-site.

Student life at Silwood Park

The campus primarily hosts postgraduate students keen on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us belong to various clubs based at Silwood Park. Key examples include:

Chicken Club – responsible for tending to the chickens raised behind our halls of residence

Book Club – who meet regularly to discuss interesting books from their reading list

Gardening Club – who oversee the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – who arrange nature walks and conservation-oriented activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the larger Imperial student body, many of us are also involved and frequently take part in activities of clubs based in South Kensington!

In an informal sense, we also have clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which are held either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Apart from club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities to ensure a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we’ve held the Silwood language exchange, where our diverse international community gathered to share languages and cultures over several weeks. We also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, where everyone came together to prepare dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Additionally, we have had community-organized parties celebrating global events (such as Carnival) or simply parties thrown for the joy of gathering.

However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It’s a Silwood tradition that the losers of the pub quiz must organize the next one, and I can proudly say I hold the record for the most pub quizzes set this year. Though I’ve lost many pub quizzes due to my limited general knowledge, there’s always great enjoyment to be had with wonderful company and a good pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the lively pulse of civilization (for example, the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt monotonous or devoid of excitement. In addition to the numerous events and activities, we have a kind and inviting community made up of students from all corners of the globe. All of us cherish nature, appreciate our

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a verdant, enchanting, and green campus filled with wildlife and vegetation rarely found on other campuses like South Kensington or White City.
