When students from Imperial contemplate Silwood Park, they picture a verdant, enigmatic, and green environment alive with distinct wildlife and plant species, setting it apart from other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are right \u2013 every representation of Silwood Park is indeed true!<\/p>\n

As a voice from this lesser-known faction within Imperial, I aim to showcase the student experience, events, and community present at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s field-based laboratory, encompassing 77 hectares and comprising ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, a historic forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick inquiry on iNaturalist, an application dedicated to cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide among a community of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on the premises. Additionally, a search on eBird reveals that 111 bird species have been documented on campus thus far.<\/p>\n

More intriguingly, Silwood Park is home to numerous extensive field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two well-recognized studies taking place on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a Student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily caters to postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolutionary projects. Most of us are active in various clubs located at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 looking after the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 frequently discussing books of interest from their reading list<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation-related activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Additionally, as part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us engage in the activities of clubs situated in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have clubs participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (which happens to be my personal favorite!), based either on the multi-sport games area (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports halls in neighboring towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and promotes these activities to cultivate a vibrant and dynamic student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community came together to share languages and cultures over several weeks. We also rang in the Chinese New Year at the start of the year, crafting dumplings and couplets to celebrate the upcoming lunar year. Additionally, we\u2019ve held community-organized festivities honoring global events (such as Carnival) or just for the sake of celebration.<\/p>\n

    One of my favorite campus events is the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the losing team of the pub quiz is responsible for setting the next one, and I can proudly state that I hold the record for the highest number of pub quizzes organized this year. Although I\u2019ve lost many pub quizzes due to my lacking general knowledge, there\u2019s always enjoyment to be had with good friends and a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll to the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed monotonous or deficient. Beyond the multitude of events and activities, we foster a warm and inviting community of students from across the globe. We all share a love for nature, our stunning campus environment, and, more importantly, each other\u2019s company. We form a closely-knit community that relishes stargazing in the chilly winter evenings on the open field by our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our room windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
