When many Imperial scholars picture Silwood Park, they think of a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus filled with wildlife and vegetation that are rare at other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every representation of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known Imperial enclave, I wish to showcase the student experience, activities, and sense of community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and open grass fields. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application designed for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations globally via an online network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. A further inquiry on eBird shows that 111 species of birds have been observed on campus to date.<\/p>\n

More intriguingly, Silwood Park is the venue for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more distinguished studies carried out on-site.<\/p>\n

Campus life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students passionate about ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many of us take part in various clubs situated at Silwood Park. Prominent examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to the chickens raised at our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 routinely convening to discuss engaging literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation-oriented events for Silwood Park students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As integral members of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities hosted by clubs in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs involved in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), taking place either at the multipurpose games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in neighboring towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club events and classes, we host numerous community-driven initiatives on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities, ensuring a dynamic and exciting student atmosphere! Recently, we\u2019ve held the Silwood language exchange, where our mostly international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year festivity at the year’s start, making dumplings and couplets to celebrate the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also seen community-organized gatherings to celebrate global events (like Carnival) or just for the joy of socializing.<\/p>\n

    My preferred event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It’s part of Silwood culture that the teams who lose the pub quiz must host the next one, and I can proudly assert I hold the record for the most pub quizzes set this year. Despite facing many losses in pub quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always enjoyment to be had with great company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from lively civilization (e.g., the train station and the closest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or insufficient. In addition to countless events and activities, we have a friendly and inclusive community of students from all corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus grounds, and most significantly, each other\u2019s companionship. We\u2019re a tight-knit community that delights in stargazing during the chilly winter on the open field beside our bar, observing birds and mammals at our windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n
