In many respects, they’re correct – every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!

As an advocate for this lesser-known community at Imperial, I’d like to showcase the student experience, activities, and community present at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

An overview of Silwood Park

Silwood Park acts as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and featuring ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” woodland, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations globally among a network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been identified on campus, along with a further look on eBird indicating that 111 bird species have been noted on campus to date.

Moreover, Silwood Park serves as the location for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project standing out as two of the more notable studies carried out on-site.

Student experience at Silwood Park

The campus primarily houses postgraduate students keen on pursuing projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are involved in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:

Chicken Club – responsible for the care of the chickens raised behind our residence halls

Book Club – convening regularly to discuss books of interest from their reading lists

Gardening Club – overseeing the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – organizing nature walks and conservation-related activities for the students at Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in the activities of clubs based in South Kensington!

Informally, we have clubs dedicated to sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which take place either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities located in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

In addition to club activities and classes, numerous community-led events occur on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities to ensure a lively and exciting student environment! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, bringing our largely international community together to share languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year celebration earlier this year, where everyone came together to prepare dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve also experienced community-organized gatherings celebrating global events (such as Carnival) or just for the joy of having parties.

My favorite event on campus, however, has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It’s part of Silwood tradition that the losers of the pub quiz must host the next one, and I can proudly state that I’ve set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite my frequent losses due to a lack of general trivia knowledge, there’s always delightful fun to be had with fantastic company and a good pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Even though it’s situated a 30-minute walk from the vibrant atmosphere of civilization (i.e., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never been dull or lacking. In addition to the many events and activities, we have a friendly and inclusive community consisting of students from across the globe. We all share a passion for nature, love

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus bustling with wildlife and plants not typically found at other campuses like South Kensington or White City.
