When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus bustling with wildlife and plants seldom found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to shine a light on the student life, activities, and community present in our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, encompassing 77 hectares and showcasing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for cataloging and sharing biodiversity sightings globally with a network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while a further search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been identified to date.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the most well-known studies carried out on-site.<\/p>\n

Student experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many of us engage in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 caring for chickens located behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 regularly sharing insights on intriguing literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 coordinating nature walks and conservation initiatives for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also join events organized by clubs situated in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), utilizing either the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports facilities in neighboring towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and classes, there are numerous community-led events taking place on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council which organizes and coordinates such activities to promote a dynamic and engaging student life! In recent months, we have held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our yearly Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, during which everyone prepared dumplings and couplets to celebrate the new lunar year. Additionally, we have hosted community-planned gatherings honoring global festivities (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of socializing.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood culture that the quiz losers arrange the next one, and I can proudly claim the title for setting the most pub quizzes this year. Despite my numerous losses due to limited general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment with good friends and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the lively town (like the train station and the closest village), life at Silwood Park never feels dull or lacking. In addition to countless events and activities, we enjoy a warm and inviting community of students from across the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a tightly-knit community that relishes stargazing in the cold winter evenings in the open field next to our pub, observing birds and mammals just outside our room windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n
