Moreover, the work culture appears significantly different, introducing fresh methods of working, communicating, and viewing creativity.

For me, part-time positions served as a connection between these two realms, assisting me in managing my finances whilst gaining insights into the UK market from a marketing and customer experience angle. My initial and most cherished position was as a MORA Content Creator within Imperial’s central marketing department. Being compensated to generate content for a prestigious university felt surreal and positively influenced my year.

Becoming a MORA Content Creator

Collaborating with the MORA team to produce content that reached over 700,000 individuals through Imperial’s social media platforms was a dream come true. It encompassed narrative-building and sharing the student journey, mastering institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that appeals to varied audiences.

This position offered unanticipated chances, such as interviewing prominent figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. None of this would have been possible without embracing that first opportunity. The MORA team is encouraging and fosters creativity. If you enjoy storytelling and wish to partake in exciting content projects, this is one of the finest part-time positions at Imperial.

Finding part-time opportunities

There are numerous avenues to discover part-time employment while studying at Imperial. I secured mine through Imperial’s internal job boards on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the role and convey enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with CVs, practice interviews, and job hunting. Employers look for reliability, proactivity, and friendliness, not just experience.

Balancing work and study

Managing work alongside classes necessitates organization. I scheduled shifts when my class load was lighter. Your degree remains the priority, but a well-selected part-time job can enhance your studies. My marketing coursework felt more relevant when applied in practical jobs.

Exploring different part-time jobs

Throughout my Master’s, I experimented with various roles such as waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each position imparted something distinctive. Working in hospitality taught me genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and composure under pressure. These lessons and skills have accompanied me beyond the café counter.

Financial independence and visa rules

On a financial level, part-time jobs proved essential. I managed to pay rent, travel, and living costs and even saved a bit. As an international student, I had the ability to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during breaks, balancing income and relaxation.

It’s vital to adhere to visa regulations, as exceeding working hours can influence your visa status. Imperial offers clear guidance, and it’s prudent to verify conditions prior to accepting any position.

Final thoughts

Looking back on my part-time experience at Imperial, it was about more than just earning money. It built confidence, instilled professionalism in a new culture, and connected me with a variety of individuals. Whether preparing coffee or developing digital campaigns, every position imparts valuable lessons for the future.

If you’re commencing your Master’s and pondering how to oversee finances while obtaining real-world exposure, consider exploring part-time positions early. A small “yes” today could lead to far richer experiences than you envision.

To discover more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/careers/" rel="category tag

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Relocating to London as an international student quickly highlights how costs can build up, ranging from rent and food to travel and tuition fees.
