Another significant realization is the unique professional environment, where work, communication, and creativity are interpreted differently compared to my home country.

For me, part-time positions connected these two realms, assisting in financial management while gaining insight into the UK market, particularly from a marketing viewpoint. My initial and most cherished position was as a MORA Content Creator within Imperial’s central marketing group. It felt surreal to earn money creating content for a prestigious university, positively influencing my year.

Becoming a MORA Content Creator

Producing content for over 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media made collaborating with the MORA team a fantasy come true. It entailed storytelling and sharing student experiences, mastering institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that resonate with varied audiences.

This role provided incredible experiences, such as interviewing notable personalities like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. None of this would have materialized without accepting that first opportunity. The MORA team is supportive, nurturing, and provides a creative environment for experimentation. If you are passionate about storytelling and wish to participate in engaging content projects, this is one of the premier part-time positions at Imperial.

Discovering part-time opportunities

There are numerous avenues to locate part-time work at Imperial. I discovered mine via Imperial’s internal job boards on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs held during Welcome Week. Customize your CV to match the position and demonstrate enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with CVs, practice interviews, and job hunting. Keep in mind, employers value reliability, proactivity, and friendliness, not solely experience.

Managing work and study

Juggling work and classes calls for planning. I arranged my shifts when my class commitments were lower. Your degree should be the primary focus, but a well-selected part-time job can enhance your studies. My marketing coursework was more relatable when applied to real-life jobs.

Exploring various part-time jobs

Throughout my Master’s program, I explored diverse positions such as waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each role imparted distinct lessons. Hospitality jobs provided valuable customer service experience, patience, teamwork, and the ability to remain composed under pressure. These competencies have remained with me well beyond the café environment.

Financial independence and visa regulations

From a financial standpoint, part-time jobs were essential. I managed to cover rent, travel, living costs, and even managed to save some funds. As an international student, I was allowed to work up to 20 hours weekly during term time and full-time during breaks, balancing income and downtime.

It is crucial to comply with visa regulations, as exceeding work hours can jeopardize your visa status. Imperial offers clear guidance, and it’s prudent to verify conditions before accepting any employment.

Concluding reflections

My part-time journey at Imperial encompassed more than just earning. It fostered self-confidence, imparted professionalism in a new cultural context, and connected me with a diverse array of individuals. Whether brewing beverages or developing digital campaigns, every position imparts important lessons for the future.

If you’re about to embark on your Master’s and are pondering how to manage finances while gaining exposure and experience, consider exploring part-time positions early. A simple “yes” today could lead to extraordinary experiences.

For more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Careers, <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Relocating to London as an international student quickly exposes the mounting costs, from rent and groceries to transportation and tuition fees.
