When you arrive in London as an international student, it becomes evident how quickly costs can add up, from housing and groceries to transportation and tuition fees. The next realization is the unique professional culture, where work, communication, and creative expression are viewed in a way that differs significantly from your home country.<\/p>\n

For me, part-time employment acted as a bridge connecting these two realms. It helped manage my budget while also offering insights into the UK market, particularly regarding marketing and customer experiences. My first and most beloved position was as a MORA Content Creator with Imperial’s central marketing group. Getting paid to create content for a prestigious university felt surreal, and the experience greatly enriched my entire year.<\/p>\n

Becoming a MORA Content Creator<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Collaborating with the MORA team and generating content that was viewed by over 700,000 users on Imperial’s social media was a dream come true. It was beyond mere filming or writing \u2013 it revolved around storytelling, sharing student experiences, mastering institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that engage diverse audiences.<\/p>\n

This position offered unexpected experiences, like interviewing public figures such as Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. These opportunities wouldn\u2019t have unfolded had I not embraced that initial offer. The MORA team is supportive and nurturing, providing a creative environment for exploration. If storytelling and involvement in stimulating content projects excite you, this is one of the prime part-time roles at Imperial.<\/p>\n

Discovering part-time opportunities<\/strong><\/h4>\n

There are many avenues to uncover part-time work while studying at Imperial. I found mine on Imperial\u2019s internal job boards via JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. The essential factor is customizing your CV to match the role you’re applying for and demonstrating genuine interest. Imperial\u2019s Careers Service can help with CV drafting, interview rehearsals, and job hunt guidance. Keep in mind, the majority of part-time employers prioritize dependability, initiative, and friendliness over mere experience.<\/p>\n

Harmonizing work and study<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Achieving a balance between work and studies necessitates careful planning. I made sure to only accept shifts when my class timetable was less demanding. Your degree should take precedence, but a well-selected part-time job can enhance your education rather than detract from it. For example, my marketing coursework gained more significance when I saw those concepts in action in real-life roles.<\/p>\n

Diving into various part-time roles<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Throughout my Master\u2019s program, I ventured into different positions like waiter, event coordinator, barista, and bartender. Each provided unique lessons. My time in hospitality taught me the essence of real customer service, instilling patience, teamwork, and the ability to stay calm in hectic situations. These experiences and skills have remained with me even after stepping away from the caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Financial self-sufficiency and visa regulations<\/strong><\/h4>\n

From a financial standpoint, part-time jobs were essential. I managed to cover my rent, transportation, and living costs through my work and even managed to save a little. As an international student, I was allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during holidays, which was adequate to strike a balance between income and downtime.<\/p>\n

It is crucial to comply with visa requirements, as going over work hour limits can jeopardize your visa status. Imperial provides straightforward guidance, and it\u2019s prudent to check the conditions before accepting any job offer.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on my part-time experience at Imperial, it transcended just making money. It was about cultivating confidence, learning professionalism in a different culture, and establishing connections with a diverse group of individuals.
