Another insight is the unique professional culture, where work, communication, and creativity are viewed differently than in your home country.

Part-time employment served as a bridge between these two worlds for me, aiding in financial management and providing perspectives on the UK market, particularly regarding marketing and customer experiences. My first and most treasured position was as a MORA Content Creator with Imperial’s central marketing team. Developing content for a prestigious university was an extraordinary and positively life-changing experience.

Becoming a MORA Content Creator

Collaborating with the MORA team was a dream come true, as I assisted them in creating content for over 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media platforms. This role entailed storytelling and sharing the student experience, learning about institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that appeal to varied audiences.

This position opened doors to unexpected experiences, such as interviewing public figures including Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. Those opportunities would not have arisen without seizing that initial chance. The MORA team is welcoming and supportive, providing a creative environment to innovate. If you’re passionate about storytelling and engaging in content initiatives, this is one of the finest part-time positions at Imperial.

Finding part-time opportunities

There are many avenues for discovering part-time work at Imperial. I located mine via Imperial’s internal job listings on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the specific role and express enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can aid with CVs, mock interviews, and job hunting. Employers appreciate reliability, initiative, and friendliness in addition to experience.

Balancing work and study

Managing work and education necessitates organization. I planned my shifts when my class schedule was less demanding. Keep in mind that your degree should come first, but a well-selected part-time job can enhance your studies. My marketing coursework became more applicable when I could relate it to real-world positions.

Exploring different part-time jobs

Throughout my Master’s program, I ventured into various positions such as waiter, event coordinator, barista, and bartender. Each taught me valuable lessons. Hospitality roles emphasized genuine customer service, patience, collaboration, and maintaining composure under pressure. These skills have remained with me long after leaving the café.

Financial independence and visa rules

Financially, part-time jobs were essential. I managed to cover rent, travel, and living expenses, and even saved a bit. As an international student, I was allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during the term and full-time during breaks, thereby balancing earning and resting. Compliance with visa regulations is imperative, as exceeding work hours can jeopardize your visa status. Imperial offers clear instructions, so always confirm your conditions before accepting employment.

Final thoughts

Looking back on my part-time experience at Imperial, it was about more than just generating income. It fostered confidence, instilled professionalism in a new cultural context, and connected me with diverse individuals. Whether making coffee or crafting digital campaigns, each role provided invaluable lessons for the future.

If you’re embarking on your Master’s and pondering how to handle finances while gaining real-world insights, consider exploring part-time jobs early. A small “yes” today might open doors to experiences beyond your wildest dreams.

To learn more about my journey, read my Imperial narrative.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Careers, <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon arriving in London as an international student, you will soon realize how costs such as rent, groceries, travel, and tuition can add up.
