The work culture also feels markedly different, introducing new methods of working, communicating, and conceptualizing creativity compared to what you were used to back home.

Part-time jobs for me served as a link between these two realms, aiding me in financial management while gaining insights into the UK market, particularly in terms of marketing and customer experience. My inaugural and favorite position was as a MORA Content Creator with the central marketing team at Imperial. Being compensated for developing content for a prestigious university felt surreal and positively impacted my year.

Becoming a MORA Content Creator

Collaborating with the MORA team to produce content that reached over 700,000 individuals through Imperial’s social media platforms was a dream come true. It encompassed storytelling and sharing the student journey, gaining knowledge on institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that appeals to varied audiences.

This position presented unforeseen opportunities, such as interviewing public figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. None of these experiences would have materialized without my initial “yes” to the opportunity. The MORA team is supportive, uplifting, and promotes creative experimentation. If you enjoy storytelling and are eager to participate in engaging content projects, this is among the finest part-time jobs available at Imperial.

Finding part-time opportunities

There are numerous avenues to discover part-time employment while studying at Imperial. I located my job through Imperial’s internal job boards on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and at career fairs during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for each position you’re pursuing and convey enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with CV preparation, mock interviews, and job hunting. Keep in mind that most employers prioritize reliability, initiative, and friendliness over just experience.

Balancing work and study

Managing work alongside your classes necessitates planning. I accepted shifts only during my lighter class periods. Your degree must remain your primary focus, but a well-chosen part-time role can enhance your academic experience. I found my marketing coursework became more significant when I witnessed those concepts applied in real-world situations.

Exploring different part-time jobs

Throughout my Master’s program, I explored various positions, including waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each role imparted unique lessons. Working in hospitality taught me genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and maintaining composure under strain. These insights and skills have remained with me long after leaving the café.

Financial independence and visa rules

From a financial standpoint, part-time positions proved invaluable. I managed to cover rent, travel, and living costs while even saving a little. As an international student, I was allowed to work 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during breaks, maintaining an ideal balance between income and downtime.

It is essential to adhere strictly to visa requirements, as working beyond the allowed hours can jeopardize your visa status. Imperial offers clear instructions, and it is prudent to verify conditions before accepting any job offer.

Final thoughts

Reflecting on my part-time experience at Imperial, it was more than merely earning money. It was about fostering confidence, understanding professionalism in a different cultural context, and connecting with diverse individuals. Whether it was brewing coffee or crafting digital campaigns, every position imparted valuable lessons for the future.

If you’re embarking on your Master’s and pondering how to handle finances while gaining practical exposure and experience, I suggest looking into part-time roles early on. The small “yes” you say today could pave the way for experiences beyond your wildest dreams.

To learn more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon relocating to London as an international student, you swiftly recognize the way costs pile up, from accommodation and food to transportation and tuition fees.
