Another insight is the unique professional atmosphere, where work, communication, and creativity are viewed differently from my home country.

For me, part-time employment served as a bridge between these two worlds, aiding in financial management while gaining insights into the UK market, especially from a marketing and customer experience viewpoint. My initial and favorite position was as a MORA Content Creator with the central marketing team at Imperial. Getting paid to produce content for a prestigious university felt surreal and positively influenced my year.

Becoming a MORA Content Creator

Assisting the team and generating content that reached over 700,000 individuals on Imperial’s social media platforms made my experience with the MORA team a dream come true. It involved storytelling and sharing the student experience, learning institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that connects with various audiences.

This position presented unexpected opportunities, like interviewing notable figures such as Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. These encounters wouldn’t have materialized without seizing that initial role. The MORA team is welcoming, supportive, and fosters a creative environment for experimentation. If you’re passionate about storytelling and eager to engage in captivating content projects, this is one of the finest part-time jobs at Imperial.

Finding part-time opportunities

There are numerous avenues to discover part-time employment while studying at Imperial. I located mine through Imperial’s internal job boards, JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the position and express enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with CVs, interview preparation, and job support. Employers prioritize reliability, initiative, and friendliness, not solely experience.

Balancing work and study

Managing work and class schedules necessitates planning. I took on shifts when my course timetable was lighter. Your degree should remain the priority, but a well-selected part-time job can enhance your studies. My marketing coursework became more relevant by observing concepts applied in actual jobs.

Exploring different part-time jobs

During my Master’s program, I engaged in various roles such as waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each position imparted valuable lessons. Working in hospitality provided real customer service experience, patience, teamwork, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. These skills have accompanied me beyond the café setting.

Financial independence and visa rules

From a financial perspective, part-time jobs were lifesavers, allowing me to cover rent, travel, and living costs, while also saving a bit. International students can work up to 20 hours weekly during term time and full-time during breaks, balancing earning with rest. It’s crucial to adhere strictly to visa regulations, as exceeding work hours can impact your visa status. Imperial offers guidance, and it’s prudent to verify conditions before taking on any job.

Final thoughts

My part-time experience at Imperial was more than just earning an income. It fostered confidence, imparted professionalism in a new culture, and connected me with a diverse range of individuals. Whether crafting coffee or developing digital campaigns, each role provides invaluable lessons for the future.

If you’re beginning your Master’s and contemplating how to manage finances while gaining real-world experience, start exploring part-time positions early. A small “yes” today might lead to opportunities beyond your wildest dreams.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Careers, Part-time job, <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Relocating to London as an international student swiftly highlights how quickly expenses can add up, from accommodation and groceries to transportation and tuition fees.
