Another insight is the unique professional culture, featuring different methods of working, communicating, and interpreting creativity when compared to your home country.

Part-time roles bridged these realms for me, aiding in financial management and comprehension of the UK market, particularly from the marketing and customer experience standpoint. My first and most beloved position was as a MORA Content Creator within the central marketing team at Imperial. Getting paid to produce content for a prestigious university felt surreal and positively influenced my year.

Becoming a MORA Content Creator

Collaborating with the MORA team to craft content that reached over 700,000 individuals on Imperial’s social media platforms was a fantasy realized. It involved storytelling and relaying the student experience, learning the nuances of institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that resonates with varied audiences.

This position brought unforeseen opportunities, such as interviewing notable personalities like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. These moments wouldn’t have come to fruition without accepting that initial chance. The MORA team is nurturing and promotes creative exploration. If you enjoy storytelling and wish to participate in captivating content projects, this is one of the premier part-time positions at Imperial.

Finding part-time opportunities

There are numerous avenues to discover part-time employment at Imperial. I located mine via Imperial’s internal job boards on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs held during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the specific role you’re applying for and demonstrate enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can aid with CVs, mock interviews, and job searches. Employers look for dependability, initiative, and approachability, not solely experience.

Balancing work and study

Successfully managing work and studies necessitates planning. I arranged my shifts during lighter class loads. Your degree should take precedence, but a thoughtfully chosen part-time job can enrich your educational experience. For example, my marketing coursework became more relevant when applied to real-life jobs.

Exploring different part-time jobs

Throughout my Master’s program, I experimented with various positions such as waiter, event organizer, barista, and bartender. Each role imparted distinct lessons. The hospitality sector taught me genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and maintaining composure under stress. These skills remain with me well beyond the café environment.

Financial independence and visa rules

From a financial perspective, part-time positions were vital. I managed to cover rent, transportation, and living costs and even set aside some savings. As an international student, I was permitted to work up to 20 hours weekly during term time and full-time during holidays, balancing earnings with downtime.

It’s crucial to comply with visa guidelines, as exceeding work hours can jeopardize your visa status. Imperial offers guidance, and it’s prudent to verify conditions before accepting any employment.

Final thoughts

Reflecting on my part-time experience at Imperial, it was far more than just earning money. It fostered confidence, demonstrated professionalism in a new cultural context, and connected me with a diverse array of individuals. Whether serving coffee or creating digital marketing campaigns, every position offers critical lessons for the future.

If you’re embarking on your Master’s and contemplating how to navigate finances while gaining practical experience, begin exploring part-time roles early on. A small “yes” today could lead to experiences beyond your expectations.

To discover more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Careers

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon relocating to London as an international student, you swiftly observe how costs like housing, groceries, transportation, and tuition start to add up.
