You also notice the unique professional environment, where work practices, communication, and creativity differ markedly from those in your home country.

Part-time employment helped me navigate these aspects, assisting in financial management and providing insights into the UK market from a marketing and customer experience viewpoint. My initial and most cherished position was as a MORA Content Creator with the central marketing team at Imperial. The experience of being compensated to produce content for a renowned university was extraordinary and had a significant positive impact on my year.

Becoming a MORA Content Creator

Collaborating with the MORA team and creating content for more than 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media platforms was a dream come true. It involved crafting narratives and sharing the student journey, mastering institutional communication, and gaining an understanding of tone and authenticity for varied audiences.

This position opened up unforeseen opportunities, such as interviewing notable public figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. These experiences would not have been possible without embracing that initial role. The MORA team is inclusive, motivating, and supports creative experimentation. If you are passionate about storytelling and engaging content projects, this is among the finest part-time positions available at Imperial.

Finding part-time opportunities

There are numerous avenues to discover part-time jobs at Imperial. I stumbled upon mine via Imperial’s internal job portal on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. Customize your CV to align with the specific role and display enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service is available to assist with CV writing, interview preparation, and job hunting. Employers value consistency, initiative, and friendliness, not solely past experience.

Balancing work and study

Managing work and academics necessitates careful planning. I arranged work shifts when my course load was lighter. Your degree takes precedence, but a thoughtfully selected part-time job can enhance your educational experience. My marketing studies became even more relevant when I applied them to actual job scenarios.

Exploring different part-time jobs

Throughout my Master’s program, I engaged in various roles such as waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each position imparted distinct lessons. Work in hospitality instilled genuine customer service skills, patience, teamwork, and composure under pressure. These abilities have remained with me beyond the coffee shop.

Financial independence and visa rules

From a financial standpoint, part-time jobs were vital. I managed to pay for rent, transportation, and living expenses while even saving some money. International students are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during holidays, striking a balance between income and relaxation. Adhere to visa regulations meticulously, as exceeding working hours may jeopardize your visa status. Imperial offers comprehensive guidance, and it is prudent to verify conditions before accepting positions.

Final thoughts

My journey with part-time work at Imperial transcended mere monetary gain. It fostered confidence, imparted professionalism within a new cultural context, and forged connections with a diverse array of individuals. Whether serving coffee or developing digital campaigns, every experience provides invaluable lessons for the future.

If you are about to embark on your Master’s journey and are curious about managing finances while gaining practical experience, aim to explore part-time opportunities early. A small “yes” today may open doors to experiences beyond your wildest expectations.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Careers, Part-time job, <a href="https://blogs.imper

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing As an international student moving to London, you soon become aware of how quickly costs add up, from rent and groceries to transportation and tuition fees.
