The next realization is the unique professional landscape, featuring different methods of working, communicating, and interpreting creativity in comparison to one’s home country.

Part-time employment became the link connecting these two domains for me, aiding in financial management and providing insight into the UK marketplace, particularly regarding marketing and customer experience. My first and most cherished position was as a MORA Content Creator with the central marketing team at Imperial. Getting paid to develop content for a prestigious university was astonishing and positively influenced my year.

Becoming a MORA Content Creator

Collaborating with the MORA team to produce content viewed by over 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media platforms was a dream come true. This role involved storytelling and conveying the student experience, acquiring knowledge about institutional communication, and grasping tone and authenticity for varying audiences.

This position opened unexpected doors, such as interviewing notable individuals like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. None of these experiences would have materialized had I not embraced that initial opportunity. The MORA team is supportive, motivating, and encourages creative exploration. If you have a passion for storytelling and wish to participate in engaging content initiatives, this is among the finest part-time positions at Imperial.

Finding part-time opportunities

Numerous avenues exist for locating part-time employment while studying at Imperial. I discovered mine via Imperial’s internal job boards on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the specific role you are pursuing and express enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can aid with CVs, mock interviews, and job searches. Most part-time employers seek dependability, initiative, and a friendly demeanor, rather than just prior experience.

Balancing work and study

Effectively balancing work and study demands planning. I scheduled shifts during lighter class periods. Your academic program takes precedence, but a well-selected part-time position can enhance your education. My coursework in marketing felt more significant when I encountered those concepts in professional environments.

Exploring different part-time jobs

Throughout my Master’s program, I experimented with various roles, including waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each position imparted something distinctive. Experience in hospitality provided lessons in genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and remaining composed under pressure. These skills and insights have accompanied me well beyond the café environment.

Financial independence and visa rules

From a financial perspective, part-time jobs were invaluable. I managed to cover rent, travel, and living costs, and even saved a little. As an international student, I was permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during vacations, striking a balance between income and rest.

It’s essential to adhere strictly to visa regulations, as exceeding working hours can jeopardize your visa status. Imperial offers clear guidance, and it’s prudent to verify conditions before accepting any positions.

Final thoughts

My part-time endeavor at Imperial was more than just a means to earn money. It was about cultivating confidence, learning professionalism within a new cultural context, and engaging with a diverse array of individuals. Whether crafting coffee or designing digital campaigns, every position imparts valuable lessons for the future.

If you are beginning your Master’s journey and pondering how to handle finances while gaining practical exposure and experience, I suggest looking into part-time roles early on. A simple “yes” today could pave the way for experiences far beyond what you can envision.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon relocating to London as an international student, the initial observation is the rapid increase in expenses—from rent and groceries to transportation and tuition fees.
