Moreover, the professional environment presents a notable contrast, featuring different methods of working, communicating, and interpreting creativity compared to what you may be accustomed to.

For me, part-time employment served as a connection between these two realms, assisting in financial management and offering perspectives on the UK market, particularly through a marketing and customer experience lens. My initial and preferred position was as a MORA Content Creator within Imperial’s central marketing team. Being compensated to generate content for a prestigious university felt surreal and positively influenced my year.

Joining the MORA Team as a Content Creator

Collaborating with the MORA team to create content for over 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media platforms was a dream come true. It entailed narrative construction and sharing the student journey, learning institutional messaging, and grasping the tone and authenticity that connects with varied audiences.

This position presented unforeseen opportunities, including interviews with notable figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. None of this would have materialized had I not seized that initial chance. The MORA team is nurturing, supportive, and affords a creative atmosphere for experimentation. If you have a passion for storytelling and wish to participate in captivating content initiatives, this is among the top part-time positions at Imperial.

Securing Part-Time Roles

There are numerous avenues to discover part-time employment while studying at Imperial. I secured my position via Imperial’s internal job boards on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs held during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the specific role you’re pursuing and express your enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service assists with CV improvement, interview practice, and job hunting. Most part-time employers look for consistency, initiative, and amicability, rather than just prior experience.

Managing Work and Academic Responsibilities

Balancing work with academic commitments necessitates organization. I arranged my shifts during weeks with a lighter class load. While your degree is the priority, a thoughtfully chosen part-time job can enrich your educational experience. My marketing assignments gained greater significance when I could see these principles applied in real-world positions.

Experimenting with Various Part-Time Positions

Throughout my Master’s program, I explored different roles such as waiter, event coordinator, barista, and bartender. Each experience imparted unique lessons. Jobs in hospitality taught me authentic customer service, patience, teamwork, and maintaining composure under pressure. These insights and skills have remained with me well beyond my time at the café.

Financial Self-Sufficiency and Visa Regulations

On a financial level, part-time jobs proved essential, covering my rent, travel, and living expenses, while also allowing for some savings. As an international student, I was permitted to work up to 20 hours a week during term time and full-time during holidays, creating a balance between income and downtime. Adhering to visa restrictions is critical, as exceeding the allowed working hours could jeopardize your visa status. Imperial offers clear advice, and it’s prudent to verify conditions before accepting any role.

Concluding Reflections

Looking back on my part-time experience at Imperial, it encompassed more than mere financial gain. It was a journey of building self-assurance, mastering professionalism in a foreign setting, and engaging with a diverse array of individuals. Every position, from brewing coffee to crafting digital campaigns, imparts worthwhile lessons for the future.

If you’re about to commence your Master’s and are pondering how to balance finances while gaining practical exposure and experience, I suggest investigating part-time roles early on. A small affirmation today could unlock experiences you can’t yet imagine.

For further insights into my experiences, read my Imperial narrative.

By Guest Contributor

Categorised under <a href="https://blogs.im

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon arriving in London as an international student, it’s evident how costs such as rent, groceries, travel, and tuition can quickly pile up.
