The work culture feels notably different, introducing new methods of operating, communicating, and interpreting creativity in contrast to what I was accustomed to back home.

Part-time employment provided a link between these realms for me, aiding in financial management while gaining insight into the UK market, especially regarding marketing and customer experience. My initial and most cherished position was as a MORA Content Creator with the central marketing team at Imperial. Getting paid to produce content for a prestigious university felt surreal and positively influenced my year.

Joining the MORA Content Creator team

Collaborating with the MORA team was a dream come true, crafting content that reached over 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media platforms. This role revolved around storytelling and conveying the student experience, while also learning about institutional communication and grasping the tone and authenticity that resonates with various audiences.

This position opened unexpected doors, including interviews with public figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. It all commenced with a simple “yes” to a modest opportunity. The MORA team is supportive, nurturing, and encourages creative exploration. If you have a passion for storytelling and wish to partake in fascinating content projects, this represents one of the finest part-time opportunities at Imperial.

Locating part-time job opportunities

There are numerous avenues to discover part-time employment while studying at Imperial. I discovered mine through Imperial’s internal job listings on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the position and exhibit enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with CV writing, mock interviews, and job hunting. Employers appreciate reliability, initiative, and a friendly demeanor, not solely prior experience.

Achieving work-study balance

Maintaining a balance between work and classes necessitates careful planning. I scheduled my shifts during periods when my coursework was lighter. Your degree must come first, but a strategically chosen part-time job can enhance your educational experience. My marketing studies felt more relevant when applied in practical job settings.

Sampling various part-time roles

Throughout my Master’s program, I explored different roles such as server, event coordinator, barista, and bartender. Each position imparted unique lessons. Work in hospitality taught essential customer service skills, patience, teamwork, and the ability to remain composed under duress. These abilities have remained with me beyond my time at the café.

Independence and visa requirements

Financially, part-time positions were vital. I managed to cover rent, transportation, and living costs, and even put some money aside. As an international student, I was allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during holidays, striking a balance between earnings and rest.

Complying with visa regulations is essential, as working beyond permitted hours can jeopardize your visa status. Imperial offers clear instructions, and it is prudent to verify conditions before accepting employment.

Concluding thoughts

My part-time experience at Imperial was more than just a way to earn money. It fostered confidence, taught professionalism within a new cultural context, and connected me with a wide range of individuals. Whether making coffee or developing digital campaigns, every position provides crucial lessons for the future.

If you’re embarking on your Master’s and contemplating how to handle finances while acquiring tangible experience, seek out part-time roles early. A small “yes” today could unfold into far more enriching experiences than you ever envisioned.

To learn more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Careers, Part-time job

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon relocating to London as an international student, it becomes apparent how quickly costs add up, ranging from rent and food to transportation and tuition fees.
