Furthermore, the professional environment is distinctly different, with fresh approaches to work, communication, and the understanding of creativity compared to my home country.

Part-time employment connected these two realms for me, assisting in financial management and providing insights into the UK market from a marketing and customer experience angle. My inaugural and most cherished position was as a MORA Content Creator with Imperial’s central marketing unit. Developing content for a prestigious university felt surreal and greatly influenced my year.

Becoming a MORA Content Creator

Collaborating with the MORA team to generate content for over 700,000 individuals on Imperial’s social media was a fantasy. It encompassed storytelling and showcasing the student journey, grasping institutional communication, and recognizing the tone and authenticity that resonates with varied audiences.

This position unveiled surprising chances, such as interviewing notable figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. It all began with agreeing to a minor opportunity. The MORA team is friendly and supportive, fostering a creative environment for experimentation. For those who enjoy storytelling and engaging content projects, this is one of the finest part-time positions at Imperial.

Discovering part-time opportunities

There are numerous avenues to discover part-time employment while studying at Imperial. I uncovered mine via Imperial’s internal job boards on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during the Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the role and demonstrate enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with CV preparation, mock interviews, and employment support. Employers value reliability, initiative, and friendliness, not solely experience.

Balancing employment and academics

Juggling work and courses necessitates organization. I accepted shifts only when my class schedule was less demanding. Your degree remains the primary focus, but a well-selected part-time job can enhance your studies. My marketing coursework felt more relevant when applied in real-world scenarios.

Trying different part-time positions

Throughout my Master’s program, I explored various roles like waiter, event coordinator, barista, and bartender. Each taught distinct lessons. Hospitality work imparted genuine customer service skills, patience, teamwork, and the ability to remain calm under stress. These competencies have persisted beyond the café environment.

Financial autonomy and visa regulations

Part-time positions were critical for finances, covering rent, transportation, and living costs, along with some savings. As an international student, I was permitted to work up to 20 hours a week during term and full-time during breaks, balancing income and downtime. It’s essential to follow visa regulations, as exceeding work hours can impact your visa standing. Imperial offers transparent guidance, and it’s prudent to verify conditions before accepting positions.

Final reflections

My part-time journey at Imperial was about more than just earning income. It built self-assurance, taught professionalism in a new cultural context, and connected me with a diverse array of individuals. Whether it was preparing coffee or crafting digital campaigns, each role provided significant lessons for the future.

If you’re embarking on your Master’s and contemplating how to manage finances while gaining practical experience, start exploring part-time roles early. A small “yes” today may lead to experiences beyond your wildest dreams.

To learn more about my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Careers, Part-time job

Contributed by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Relocating to London as an international student swiftly highlights how costs like accommodation, groceries, transport, and tuition can build up.
