Another insight is the unique professional atmosphere, where work, communication, and creativity are seen differently compared to your home country.

Part-time positions acted as a link for me between these environments, assisting in financial management while gaining insight into the UK market from a marketing and customer experience angle. My inaugural and preferred position was as a MORA Content Creator with Imperial’s main marketing team. Getting paid to produce content for a prestigious university was surreal and positively influenced my year.

Becoming a MORA Content Creator

Collaborating with the MORA team, producing content for over 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media platforms, was a dream come true. It involved storytelling and showcasing the student experience, grasping institutional communication, and understanding the tone and authenticity that appeal to various audiences.

This position presented unexpected chances, such as interviewing notable personalities like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. None of this would have been possible without agreeing to that initial opportunity. The MORA team is supportive, uplifting, and offers a creative space for exploration. If you are passionate about storytelling and wish to be part of exciting content projects, this is one of the finest part-time opportunities at Imperial.

Finding part-time opportunities

Many avenues exist for locating part-time employment while studying at Imperial. I discovered mine via Imperial’s internal job portals on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the position you’re interested in and demonstrate enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service provides assistance with CVs, mock interviews, and job searches. Most part-time employers seek reliability, initiative, and friendliness, not exclusively experience.

Balancing work and study

Managing work and classes necessitates planning. I accepted shifts only when my class schedule was less intense. Keep in mind, your degree remains the main priority, but a well-selected part-time job can enhance your studies. My marketing assignments felt more impactful when I observed those concepts in real-world applications.

Exploring different part-time jobs

Throughout my Master’s program, I explored various roles such as waiter, event coordinator, barista, and bartender. Each job imparted something distinctive. Working in the hospitality sector taught me genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and maintaining composure under stress. These insights have remained with me beyond the café environment.

Financial independence and visa rules

From a financial standpoint, part-time jobs were a godsend, helping to cover rent, travel, and living costs, along with some savings. As an international student, I was permitted to work up to 20 hours weekly during term time and full-time during breaks, achieving a balance between income and relaxation.

Adhering to visa requirements is essential, as exceeding working hours can jeopardize your visa status. Imperial offers clear guidance, and it’s prudent to verify terms before accepting any position.

Final thoughts

Looking back on my part-time experience at Imperial, it was more than just financial gain. It was about cultivating confidence, acclimating to professionalism in a new culture, and connecting with diverse individuals. Whether making coffee or developing digital campaigns, each position imparts valuable lessons for the future.

If you’re beginning your Master’s and pondering how to manage finances while obtaining practical exposure, I suggest investigating part-time roles early. A simple “yes” today could lead to experiences beyond your wildest dreams.

To discover more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under <a href="https://

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing As an overseas student relocating to London, you swiftly recognize how costs can escalate quickly, from accommodation and groceries to transport and tuition fees.
