Moreover, the workplace culture is notably distinct, introducing new methods of working, communicating, and understanding creativity.

For me, part-time roles bridged these two realms, assisting me in managing finances and grasping the UK market, especially from a marketing and customer experience viewpoint. My initial and favorite position was as a MORA Content Creator within Imperial’s central marketing team. Being compensated to produce content for a prestigious university felt surreal and greatly influenced my year.

Becoming a MORA Content Creator

Producing content for over 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media platforms made collaborating with the MORA team a dream come true. It encompassed storytelling and conveying the student experience, learning institutional communication, and comprehending the tone and authenticity that appeal to varied audiences.

This position provided unexpected chances, such as interviewing public figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. These encounters would not have occurred without embracing that initial opportunity. The MORA team is encouraging and fosters creative exploration. If you enjoy storytelling and wish to participate in engaging content projects, this is one of the top part-time positions at Imperial.

Exploring part-time job opportunities

There are numerous ways to discover part-time work at Imperial. I found mine via Imperial’s internal job listings on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the position you’re applying for and display enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with CVs, mock interviews, and job search aid. Employers look for dependability, initiative, and friendliness, not just experience.

Balancing employment and academics

Managing work and studies necessitates organization. I arranged shifts when my class schedule was lighter. Your degree remains the priority, but a wisely chosen part-time position can enhance your studies. My marketing coursework took on greater significance when applied to real-world positions.

Experiencing various part-time roles

During my Master’s studies, I experimented with different jobs such as waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each position imparted distinct lessons. Work in hospitality taught me genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and remaining composed under pressure. These abilities have remained with me beyond the café environment.

Financial self-sufficiency and visa regulations

From a financial perspective, part-time positions were vital. I managed my rent, travel, and living costs while even saving some money. As an international student, I was allowed to work up to 20 hours weekly during term time and full-time during holidays, balancing earnings and relaxation.

It’s essential to comply with visa regulations, as exceeding work hours can impact your visa status. Imperial provides clear instructions, and it’s prudent to confirm conditions before taking any job.

Concluding thoughts

My part-time experience at Imperial was about more than just making money. It cultivated confidence, taught professionalism within a new culture, and connected me with diverse individuals. Whether making coffee or crafting digital campaigns, every role imparts valuable lessons for the future.

If you’re beginning your Master’s and pondering how to handle finances while acquiring real-world experience, consider part-time roles early on. A small “yes” today could open doors to experiences greater than you can envision.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Careers, <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/part-time-job/" rel="

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Relocating to London as an overseas student promptly highlights the steep living expenses, encompassing rent, groceries, travel, and tuition fees.
