Furthermore, the professional environment might seem quite distinct, with novel approaches to work, communication, and creativity compared to your home country.

For me, part-time jobs served as a connection between these two realms, assisting me in managing finances and gaining insight into the UK market from a marketing and customer experience viewpoint. My initial and beloved position was as a MORA Content Creator with Imperial’s central marketing team. It felt incredible to be compensated for creating content for a prestigious university, and the experience greatly influenced my year.

Becoming a MORA Content Creator

Collaborating with the MORA team was a dream come true, crafting content viewed by over 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media platforms. It wasn’t solely about filming or writing; it involved storytelling, conveying the student journey, mastering institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that resonate with varied audiences.

This position presented unforeseen opportunities, like interviewing prominent figures such as Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. None of this would have occurred had I not accepted that initial chance. The MORA team is welcoming, supportive, and offers a creative environment for experimentation. If you enjoy storytelling and wish to participate in engaging content projects, this is one of the finest part-time positions at Imperial.

Finding part-time opportunities

There are numerous ways to discover part-time employment at Imperial. I found mine through Imperial’s internal job boards on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the position you are applying for and demonstrate enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist you with your CV, interview practices, and job hunting. Most part-time employers look for reliability, proactivity, and friendliness, not just experience.

Balancing work and study

Managing work and study requires careful planning. I took shifts when my class schedule was less demanding. Keep in mind that your degree should be the priority, but a well-chosen part-time job can enhance your studies. My marketing coursework felt more substantial when I saw those concepts applied in real-world jobs.

Exploring different part-time jobs

Throughout my Master’s, I explored various jobs including waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each position imparted something unique. Working in hospitality taught me genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and maintaining composure under stress. These lessons and skills have accompanied me beyond the café counter.

Financial independence and visa rules

From a financial perspective, part-time jobs were a savior. I was able to cover rent, travel, and living expenses and even manage to save a little. As an international student, I was allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during holidays, balancing income with relaxation. It is vital to adhere to visa regulations, as exceeding work hours can impact your visa status. Imperial provides clear guidance, and it’s advisable to verify conditions before accepting any job.

Final thoughts

My part-time experience at Imperial transcended mere earnings. It was about cultivating confidence, mastering professionalism in a new culture, and connecting with diverse individuals. Whether making coffee or crafting digital campaigns, every role imparts valuable lessons for the future.

If you are embarking on your Master’s and pondering how to manage finances while gaining exposure and experience, begin exploring part-time roles early. A simple “yes” today could lead to significantly richer experiences than you anticipate.

For insights into my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under <a href="https://blogs

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing When relocating to London as an international student, you will soon realize how costs like rent, groceries, travel, and tuition can build up.
