The subsequent realization is the unique professional culture, where work, communication, and creativity are viewed differently than in my home country.

Part-time positions acted as a connection between these two realms for me. They assisted in financial management and offered insights into the UK market, especially regarding marketing and customer experience. My initial and favorite job was as a MORA Content Creator within Imperial’s central marketing team. Being compensated for creating content for a prestigious university felt surreal and positively impacted my year.

Transitioning to a MORA Content Creator

Collaborating with the MORA team to produce content for over 700,000 followers on Imperial’s social media platforms was a dream come true. It involved storytelling and sharing the student experience, mastering institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that resonates with a wide range of audiences.

This position presented unexpected opportunities, such as interviewing notable figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. These moments wouldn’t have occurred without embracing that initial opportunity. The MORA team is encouraging, supportive, and fosters creative exploration. For those enthusiastic about storytelling and content initiatives, it stands as one of the finest part-time positions at Imperial.

Discovering part-time opportunities

There are countless avenues to find part-time employment while studying at Imperial. I discovered mine through Imperial’s internal job postings on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs held during Welcome Week. Customizing your CV for each role and demonstrating enthusiasm is crucial. Imperial’s Careers Service provides CV support, practice interviews, and job search assistance. Employers look for reliability, proactive behavior, and friendliness, not solely experience.

Juggling work and studies

Managing work and studies necessitates planning. I arranged my shifts when my class schedule was less demanding. Prioritizing your degree is vital, but a thoughtfully chosen part-time job can enhance your studies. My marketing coursework felt more applicable when connected to real-world roles.

Experimenting with various part-time jobs

Throughout my Master’s program, I explored an array of roles including waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each provided unique insights. Hospitality positions imparted genuine customer service skills, patience, teamwork, and composure under pressure. These abilities remain invaluable beyond the café counter.

Financial independence and visa regulations

From a financial standpoint, part-time jobs were essential. They covered rent, travel, and living expenses, allowing for some savings. International students are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during breaks, striking a balance between income and relaxation. Following visa rules is crucial, as exceeding work hours can impact visa status. Imperial offers clear guidance, and it’s prudent to check conditions before accepting positions.

Concluding thoughts

Reflecting on my part-time experience at Imperial, it was more than just earning money. It was about cultivating confidence, learning professionalism in a new cultural context, and connecting with a diverse community. Every position, from making coffee to developing digital campaigns, imparts valuable lessons for the future.

If you’re starting your Master’s and looking to manage finances while gaining practical experience, seek out part-time roles early on. A small “yes” today could open doors to unexpectedly significant experiences.

To explore more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Careers, <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon arriving in London as an international student, the first realization is how rapidly expenses add up, from accommodation and groceries to transportation and tuition fees.
