Another observation is the unique work culture, featuring new methods of working, communicating, and interpreting creativity compared to my home country.

Part-time employment connected these two realms for me, aiding in financial management and gaining insights into the UK market, particularly from a marketing and customer experience angle. My initial and most cherished position was as a MORA Content Creator with Imperial’s central marketing division. It was surreal to receive payment for crafting content for a prestigious university, positively impacting my year.

Becoming a MORA Content Creator

Collaborating with the MORA team to produce content viewed by over 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media was a fantasy come true. It included storytelling and sharing the student journey, acquiring knowledge about institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that appeal to varied audiences.

This position presented unforeseen chances, like interviewing notable figures such as Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. None of these experiences would have arisen without my initial acceptance of the opportunity. The MORA team is welcoming, supportive, and fosters a creative environment for experimentation. If you enjoy storytelling and wish to participate in exciting content projects, this is one of the finest part-time positions at Imperial.

Discovering part-time opportunities

There are numerous avenues to locate part-time employment while studying at Imperial. I found my position via Imperial’s internal job listings on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career expos during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the specific role and display enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service is available to assist with CVs, mock interviews, and job hunting. Most part-time employers value reliability, initiative, and friendliness over mere experience.

Managing work and study

Juggling work and academic commitments necessitates organization. I arranged my shifts when my class commitments were fewer. Keep in mind, your degree should come first, but a well-selected part-time position can enhance your education. Applying marketing concepts from my coursework to real-world roles made my studies feel more relevant.

Trying out different part-time jobs

Throughout my Master’s program, I explored various roles such as waiter, event coordinator, barista, and bartender. Each position provided unique insights. Working in hospitality imparted genuine customer service skills, patience, teamwork, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. These lessons and abilities have proven beneficial beyond the café environment.

Financial independence and visa regulations

From a financial standpoint, part-time jobs were essential. I managed to pay for rent, travel, and living expenses while also saving a little. As an international student, I was permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during breaks, allowing me to balance income and downtime. Adhere strictly to visa regulations, as exceeding work hours can impact your visa status. Imperial offers clear advice, and it is prudent to verify terms before taking any job.

Concluding remarks

My part-time experience at Imperial was more than just earning an income. It fostered confidence, taught professionalism in a foreign culture, and connected me with a variety of individuals. Whether serving coffee or developing digital campaigns, every role imparts valuable lessons for the future.

If you’re beginning your Master’s and pondering how to oversee finances while gaining practical exposure, seek part-time roles early. A simple “yes” today could lead to experiences beyond what you can imagine.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial narrative.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Careers, <a href="

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Relocating to London as an international student swiftly highlights how costs can pile up, from housing and food to transport and tuition fees.
